How to write a successful and creative diary

diaryWriting a story is a fun creative outlet, and authors can use creative license to format their stories in various ways. One popular format for a story is a diary or journal format, in which the story is told through the point of view of one character writing his thoughts and describing events in his diary. A diary story should be told in first person and requires careful planning, as diaries can be too descriptive and lacking in action, which does not make for an effective story.

Instructions
1.    Brainstorm ideas for your diary story. The most important thing to do is to understand your main character who is writing the diary. Allow yourself to ramble freely in a notebook or document as the character, using "I" or "me" as if you are the character. Let him talk about his likes and dislikes, his emotions, his story. You may be able to use some of these thoughts later.

2.    Write one paragraph summarizing your story. A diary story cannot simply be a collection of journal entries that does not have an actual story arc; like any tale, there must be a definite beginning, middle and satisfying conclusion.

3.    Write an outline for your diary story. Focus on the main events that happen to your main character that he will be writing about in his diary, and write them in chronological order. Add any notes or bits of dialogue that occur to you as you outline.

4.    Write the first draft of your diary story based on the outline. With any story, but particularly one in diary format, voice is vital if the story is going to be successful. The only way to find you and your character's voice is by writing regardless of whether or not you are happy with what is coming out. You may not find the character's voice -- his mannerisms, the way he talks and phrases things -- until the end of the first draft, but you will be revising and can fix this.

5.    Include dialogue in your diary story. While most actual diaries do not include written out dialogue, a story does, and you can write dialogue to both enhance the story and make it more entertaining and believable for the reader.

6.    Read and revise your dialogue story. Pay constant attention to the way your character writes and expresses himself, and edit or delete as necessary. While technically you can have intentional grammar errors in order to sound authentic, remember these must stay consistent throughout the story.

How some young women’s vanity led to the highlighter pen

It's always fascinating to pick up a simple object on your desk and contemplate how it ever came to arrive there in the first place.

Take the ubiquitous Stabilo Boss, the World's biggest selling highlighter pen. How this came to claim a spot in every office stationery cupboard is remarkable and owes much to some ingenious German women who stumbled across the cosmetic pencil early in the 20th Century.

The Schwanhausser Brothers (Schwan meaning Swan and spawning the modern Swan name and logo) were well established manufacturers of traditional pencils in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg. One of the company's smaller lines was the Dermatograph, a soft, wax based pencil designed specifically for surgeons when marking out skin for incision. Evidently some women started using these as eyebrow pencils and Schwan subsequently decided to make them specifically for this purpose. Thus, in 1927, the cosmetic pencil was officially born.

Even to this day, Schwan Stabilo remains a major manufacturer of cosmetic pencils although for other brand names rather than their own. In 1935, the company was given another important boost, again almost by accident, when the Maggi food corporation ordered 300,000 pencils with their name printed on them for free distribution in butchers' shops. Schwan Stabilo had seen the future and immediately set up a department to sell pens and pencils embossed with advertising content.

By the 1960's the company was firmly established in the pen market and was one of the pioneers of novel felt-tip and fibre-tip varieties.

However, it was in 1971, after the company had set up its own injection moulding facility, that the now World famous Schwan Stabilo Boss highlighter with its trademark fluorescent ink was first developed. So next time you order something like a Stabilo Rollerball Point Pen from Cartridgeline, just picture those young frauleins pocketing their employer's wax pencils in order to sort their eyebrows out!

A cup of coffee is so much more!

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking and some expensive and exquisite, telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, ‘If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones.”While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress’.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the better cups and are eyeing each other’s cups.’ ‘Now, if life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of life doesn’t change. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it’

So don’t let the cups drive you…enjoy the coffee instead.
